NAMI Virginia Beach Announces Mental Health Awareness Events in Town Center of Virginia Beach

Millions of Americans face the reality of living with a mental illness every year. During May, mental health advocates across the country are working together to bring awareness to mental health. At the heart of Virginia Beach’s Town Center, the Clark Nexsen building will be adorned with green lighting May 1 to 8. NAMI, the Mental Health Awareness Coalition, and Town Center businesses will host events benefiting Virginia Beach citizens affected by mental illness throughout the week.

Wednesday, May 1 @ 11:30 AM – Kick Off Event at the Fountain Plaza

Join TV personality Tom Schaad as he leads us in welcoming the Mayor, Local and State officials for lunch at the Fountain Plaza as they share personal stories that emphasize the importance of mental health. They’ll highlight accomplishments and bring awareness on what still needs to be done to improve mental health. Complimentary refreshments will served.

Wednesday, May 1 – Friday, May 3 @ 11:00 AM – 2:00 PM – Education Fair at the Fountain Plaza

Mental health advocates will be on-site passing out complimentary reading material.

Wednesday, May 15 @ 7:00 PM – 9:00 PM – “Changing The Game” at The Z

The Virginia Sports Hall of Fame and NAMI Coastal Virginia invite you to an evening at the “Z”. Stories, discussion, perspective and guidance on mental health within the sports community with a panel of athletes and experts

Athletes: Aaron Rouse, Eugene Holloman , Jonathan Cumpston, Dr. Claire LeBlanc -OLHS, and Gary Bennet, Va.Tech athletic teams psychologist.

Experts: Del. Cheryl Turpin, Dr. Scott Sautter – team Doctor Norfolk Admirals, Melissa Tambura – Optima Health, Dr. Claire LeBlanc, OLHS, C. Douglas Finney – Sports Psychology, Finney Zimmerman PLC

Several Town Center businesses will take part in Mental Health Month by wearing green ribbons and adorning green balloons to their store fronts to signify their support for mental health awareness. Selected merchants will also offer discounts and promotions throughout the week.

  • Keagan’s Irish Pub will be displaying a “Nickels for NAMI” donation jar. Your loose change donations will go directly to NAMI.
  • Tupelo Honey has named NAMI as their charity of the month for May! They will donate $1 for every drink sold off their specialty board.
  • Ribbon Contest: You can purchase a green ribbon for $1 at Keagan’s Irish Pub, Tupelo Honey, Gordon Biersch and California Pizza Kitchen with 100% of the donation going to NAMI. Each restaurant will have a contest to see who can sell the most ribbons. The server with the most ribbons sold will win a $40 gift card to The Royal Chocolate (shout out to our favorite chocolate shop for donating the prize!). So, join in the fun and support your favorite bartender/server and a good cause for just a buck!
